• Takayama Line: Sohara (Gifu) ⇄ Unuma

Kagamigahara Station opened on 1 November 1920 as the terminus of the newly built Takayama Line section between Gifu and Kagamigahara, handling both passengers and freight. The line was extended onward to Mino-Ōta on 12 November 1921, making the stop an intermediate station. Freight handling was discontinued on 21 May 1961 and parcel handling on 1 January 1969, when the station was destaffed. JR Central took over on 1 April 1987 at the privatisation of JNR, and the convenience store San-Rail Kakamigahara opened in the station building. TOICA service began on 13 March 2010.

Although the city is called Kakamigahara, the station name is written 各務ケ原 and read "Kagamigahara" — distinct from the city name's reading "Kakamigahara" and from the nearby Meiden-Kakamigahara Station, which uses yet another spelling.
