History
Sohara Station opened on 1 June 1942 as a passenger station inserted between Naka and Kagamigahara on the Takayama Main Line, with freight service added on 15 November that year. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1978 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984. The station was destaffed on 1 April 1985, and JR Central took over at the 1 April 1987 privatisation of JNR. The original station building, which had stood since opening, was replaced in 1997 by a compact waiting-room-only structure. TOICA service began on 13 March 2010, and a new station-front plaza was completed in 2023.
Notes
Sohara is the nearest JR station to JASDF Gifu Air Base; on airshow days, staff are temporarily assigned to the otherwise unattended station and extra trains are run from Gifu Station.
