Toyonaka Station opened on 29 September 1913, on what is now the Hankyu Takarazuka Main Line in the city of Toyonaka, Osaka Prefecture, originally as a stop on the Minoo Arima Electric Tramway. It was one of two stations to introduce Japan's first multi-function ticket machines in January 1967 (alongside Takatsuki Station), and automated fare gates in October 1973. The station became a full-time express stop in November 1997. Elevation of the line through Toyonaka began with the Umeda-bound track in November 1994, the Takarazuka-bound track in November 1997, and was completed in November 2000; the new platform handles ten-car trains. Station numbering (HK-46) was introduced on 21 December 2013. The station consists of a single elevated island platform with two tracks.

Toyonaka and Takatsuki Station were chosen for Hankyu's introduction of Japan's first multi-function ticket machines in January 1967 - the technology became standard across Japanese commuter railways.
