Shitanoe Station opened on 15 August 1915 as one of several intermediate halts on what was then the Hōshū Main Line, when Japanese Government Railways extended their track south to a new terminus at Usuki. The original line had been built by the private Kyushu Railway, which was nationalised on 1 July 1907. On 15 December 1923 the Hōshū Main Line was renamed the Nippō Main Line. After the 1987 privatisation of JNR, control of the station passed to JR Kyushu. Located in the city of Usuki, Ōita, Shitanoe today is unstaffed and consists of an island platform reached by footbridge from an old Japanese-style station building serving only as a waiting room.
