Sashiu Station opened on 1 October 1947 as a temporary stop on the existing Nippō Main Line under what was then the Ministry of Transport's Ōita Railway Bureau. It was converted to a permanent station on 10 January 1950 when passenger operations were formalised. Parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984, and the station was destaffed on 1 November of the same year. Following the 1987 privatisation of JNR, JR Kyushu inherited operations. Located on a hillside cutting in the city of Usuki, Ōita, the station today is an unstaffed halt with a single island platform reached by footbridge, serving a small number of daily commuters.

Because the platform sits on a sharp curve, even non-stopping trains must slow down through the station.
