Shintomichō Station opened on 27 March 1980 as the terminus of the Teito Rapid Transit Authority's Yūrakuchō Line extension from Ginza-itchōme; the planning name had been "Akashichō" before local lobbying produced the current title. The station became an intermediate stop when the line was extended east to Shin-Kiba on 8 June 1988. Privatisation transferred operations to Tokyo Metro on 1 April 2004, and PASMO acceptance began in March 2007. Platform-edge doors entered service on 29 June 2013. Underground passages were upgraded for inter-station transfer with the adjacent Tsukiji Station on the Hibiya Line from 17 March 2018.

Because the line tunnels here use a twin-bore shield without a centre column, the platform offers an unusually open sight-line that rail-photo enthusiasts have nicknamed a "holy ground".
