The stop opened on 14 July 1925 as Shinmei Stop, originally serving as the junction between the Higashida Main Line and the Yagyūbashi branch line. It was later renamed Shinkawa (date unrecorded). On 7 March 1976 the Yagyūbashi branch was abolished and the safety island on the branch side was removed.

Shinkawa is a roadbed tram stop with two relative platforms and roofed safety islands on Aichi National Route 259 (or its preceding city street); a single crossover west of the stop is used mostly for short-turning extra services during the annual October Toyohashi Festival. The stop number is 3.
