Onuka Station opened on 15 June 1935 as the terminus of a Japanese National Railways extension of the Sanjin Line from Tōjō. A further extension to Bingo-Ochiai on 10 October 1936 made it a through station, and the Sanjin Line was absorbed into the Geibi Line on 1 July 1937. Freight handling ended on 1 September 1972 and parcel service on 31 October 1983, when the station was made unstaffed and converted to simple delegated operation. JR West took over at the April 1987 privatisation. In 2001 the second platform and its passing track were removed, leaving a single-track stop and ending the possibility of train crossings between Niimi and Tōjō. The station today is 33.6 km from Bitchū-Kōjiro.
