Yushima Station opened on 20 December 1969 as a stop on the Teito Rapid Transit Authority's (TRTA) Chiyoda Line, serving the Bunkyō ward neighbourhood near Shinobazu Pond and Ueno Park. The station facilities passed to Tokyo Metro on 1 April 2004 with the privatisation of TRTA. PASMO IC card service began on 18 March 2007, and departure melodies were introduced on 27 October 2018. A single island platform with two tracks lies under Ueno-Chiyoda boundary streets. Although planners initially considered making Yushima a transfer point with the future Toei Ōedo Line, no connection was built; the Ōedo Line's Ueno-okachimachi station opened to the east instead.

Just west of the platforms is a single-train siding accessible from both directions of the Chiyoda Line, used to overnight a train brought in from Ayase that becomes the next morning's first northbound service.
