Yudaonsen Station opened on 20 February 1913 as Yuda Station (湯田駅) when the Imperial Japanese Government Railways Yamaguchi Line was extended from Ogōri (today Shin-Yamaguchi) to Yamaguchi, in what is today the city of Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was renamed Yudaonsen on 20 March 1961 to advertise the nearby hot-spring resort. With the 1 April 1987 JNR privatisation the station passed to JR West. Limited-express Super Oki and the seasonal sightseeing steam train SL Yamaguchi both stop at the station. The current station sits 10.3 kilometres from the line junction at Shin-Yamaguchi and is operated by JR West subsidiary Chūgoku Kōtsū Service.

A free public foot-bath (ashiyu) was installed in the station forecourt as part of a 2011 city-led redevelopment timed to "Oideyase Yamaguchi" National Sports Festival, advertising the Yuda hot-spring town despite the station itself sitting nearly a kilometre from the actual onsen district.
