• Ōu Line: Tendo ⇄ Kaminoyama-Onsen

Yamagata Station opened on 11 April 1901 as the terminus of the Ōu South Line, extended that day from Kaminoyama, and was constructed inside the third bailey of the former Yamagata Castle. The line was given the name Ōu Main Line on 12 October 1909. A second wooden station building was completed in 1916, replaced in 1967 by an approximately 500-million-yen "people's station" combined with the Yamagata Station Department Store. The Yamagata Shinkansen began service on 1 July 1992 with the present bridge-style station, and was extended north to Shinjō on 4 December 1999. JR East took over from Japanese National Railways at privatisation on 1 April 1987. Suica acceptance arrived on 1 April 2014.
