Ushizu Station opened on 5 May 1895 as an intermediate stop on the private Kyushu Railway's new western extension from Saga to Takeo (today Takeo-Onsen). The Kyushu Railway was nationalised on 1 July 1907 and the line was redesignated the Nagasaki Main Line on 12 October 1909. Freight handling ended on 15 November 1982 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984, with the station briefly going unstaffed on 20 January 1985 before being contracted out. Control passed to JR Kyushu at privatisation on 1 April 1987. The current red-brick warehouse-style building was rebuilt on 20 April 2001. Ticket sales ended on 11 March 2022, the station became unstaffed the following day, and SUGOCA service began on 3 October 2024.

On 26 March 2021 a street piano was installed in the station waiting room as a community project, and short impromptu concerts have since been held there using the instrument.
