Tateba Station opened on 29 August 1999 as part of the Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line's Totsuka-Shonandai extension. The station sits beneath the busy intersection of two prefectural roads, Yokohama-Iseharasen (Chogo-kaido) and Akuwa-Kamakurasen (Kamakura-michi), on the former site of the Kanachu Totsuka bus depot. Operation was outsourced to Keio Setsubi Service from 1 December 2004, platform-edge doors entered service on 1 September 2007, and on 18 July 2015 a new daytime rapid service began calling here. The name comes from the historical 'tateba' or roadside rest house along the old Chogo road.

The interior concourse incorporates a ceramic public-art panel titled 'JOY OF LIFE' by Louis Fransen, set inside the fare-gate area.
