History

Taninokuchi Station opened on 15 January 1949 as an additional stop on the then Shibushi Line. Located in present-day Nichinan in Miyazaki Prefecture, it sits 56.1 km from the line origin at Minami-Miyazaki. The route was redesignated the Nichinan Line on 8 May 1963, and the station passed to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of JNR. The station has no building, only a simple weather shelter on a single side platform, and is reached from the access road by a level crossing. From a 4 March 2017 timetable revision the Nichinan Marine rapid stopped here, but a March 2026 revision removed it from the rapid-service stop list.

Notes

After joining the rapid "Nichinan Marine" stop list in 2017, the station lost its rapid stop again at the March 2026 timetable revision.
