Takanodai Station opened on 21 October 1948 on the Seibu Kokubunji Line in Kodaira, Tokyo, 4.2 km from the Higashi-Murayama terminus. The original single side platform was rebuilt as two opposite side platforms with a passing siding in October 1961. An underpass entered service on 1 February 1982, abolishing the in-station level crossing, and a new station building opened on 12 March 1985, with yard improvements completed on 13 December 1986. Barrier-free works added an elevator, accessible toilets and an open-counter information window in February 2011. On 25 March 2025 the station switched to a remote-assistance staffing model and on-site ticket-window sales ended.

Although the station's name uses the kanji 鷹の台 (Takanodai), the matching municipal place-name has been spelt entirely in hiragana — たかの台 — since the surrounding district was established.
