• JR Sanyō Main Line: Himeji-Bessho ⇄ Hōden

The station opened on 23 December 1888 as Amida Station, on the day Sanyo Railway extended its line from Akashi to Himeji. It was renamed Sone on 1 March 1902 after lobbying from neighbouring villages who wanted recognition of the famous pine at Sone Tenmangu Shrine. After Sanyo Railway was nationalised on 1 December 1906, the station moved to its present location on 1 November 1907. Operations transferred to JR West on 1 April 1987, the JR Kobe Line nickname was applied in March 1988, and station number JR-A81 was added in March 2018. A barrier-free project completed on 17 March 2011 added an entrance ramp, lift, and accessible toilet, and a new station square opened in March 2020 on the former freight yard.

The platform sits on a 500-metre-radius curve, leaving a wide gap between train and platform when stopped; JR West marks the edge with a red-and-white caution strip lit from below.
