Shiogama Station opened on 9 July 1956 as part of the rerouting of the Tōhoku Main Line through the wartime "sea line" via Rikuzen-Sannō. The new route, completed for freight in 1944, was promoted to the main line in 1956 alongside the opening of this passenger station; the original Shiogama Station (today's Shiogamakō) was relegated to a freight stop. From 1971 to 1975 it hosted the limited express "Aoba" between Sendai and Akita. The station passed to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. From 30 May 2015 it became the operational branch point for the Senseki-Tōhoku Line, with a special fare exemption permitting through travel to the registered junction at Matsushima.
