Shimata Station opened on 25 September 1897 along with the San'yō Railway's extension from Hiroshima to Tokuyama. With the company's nationalisation on 1 December 1906 it became a government railway station, and from 1909 the line was officially named the San'yō Main Line. Freight handling ended on 1 February 1962 and the station building was rebuilt on 30 March 1972. Parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984. With JNR's privatisation on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR West. The station became unstaffed on 1 April 2004, and ICOCA card use began on 12 March 2022.

The station is in Yamaguchi Prefecture and is read 'Shimata', distinguishing it from the better-known JR Central Shimada (しまだ) Station on the Tōkaidō Main Line in Shizuoka.
