• Ibusuki Makurazaki Line: Hirakawa ⇄ Nakamyo

Sesekushi Station opened on 20 May 1934 when the Japanese Government Railways' then Ibusuki Line was extended south from its previous terminus at Goino. The route was renamed the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line on 31 October 1963, and the station passed to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of JNR. The above-ground station sits 20.6 km from the line origin at Kagoshima-Chūō and has two opposed side platforms connected by a footbridge. It was destaffed on 8 March 1983 with the introduction of centralised traffic control, restaffed on 1 April 1986 after a rise in passenger numbers, and destaffed for good on 1 April 1990. SUGOCA IC cards became usable from 1 December 2012.

The second-platform exit faces the Kagoshima Municipal Waterworks' Sesekushi No. 2 Water Source, which was repurposed from the station's former water-supply facility for steam locomotives.
