Sannomiya-Hanadokeimae Station opened on 7 July 2001 as the eastern terminus of the Kobe Municipal Subway Kaigan Line. The provisional name during construction was simply "Sannomiya," but the station was given a distinct name on opening because the existing surface Sannomiya stations of JR, Hankyu, Hanshin and the Seishin-Yamate Line lay several hundred metres to the north. The suffix refers to the flower clock that once stood north of Kobe City Hall (since relocated to the East Park). The underground station has a single island platform with two tracks and is themed "Gateway to the City of Theatre." A planned extension toward HAT Kobe has been preserved in the eastward track structure.

The 2005 demand forecast for the station projected about 21,652 daily passengers, but actual ridership has remained near one-third of that figure for two decades.
