Sakyōyama Station opened on 10 June 1942 on the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line. Because the stop is the closest rail access to Ōtaka-ryokuchi park, the platform signs carried the nickname "Ryokuchi-kōen-mae" from 15 November 1973 until that branding was eventually removed. On 15 September 2004 the Tranpass magnetic-fare system was introduced and a simple station building was added on the down side; the station was destaffed in August 2007, when the up-side building was also rebuilt. Contactless manaca cards began on 11 February 2011. From 18 March 2023 Sakyōyama no longer received special semi-express stops.

When Ōtaka-ryokuchi park hosts events, semi-express and some express trains make special unscheduled stops at Sakyōyama.
