Saka Station opened on 27 December 1903 with the government railway's Kaitaichi-Kure section, briefly leased to the Sanyō Railway in 1904 before reverting in 1906; line names were standardised in 1909 and the station became part of the Kure Line. Freight handling ended in 1976, and a reinforced-concrete station building was completed on 22 January 1979. With Japanese National Railways' 1987 privatisation, the station passed to JR West and received station number JR-Y06. From 15 July 1999 the platforms were rebuilt as an elevated bridge structure, opening on 21 July 2000 together with the Asagao-Road north-south concourse. Saka has been served by the Akiji Liner rapid since 2004, with one side platform and one island platform on three tracks.
