Obase-Nishikōdai-mae Station traces its origin to Obase Signal Station, opened on 28 May 1944 by the Ministry of Transport and Communications. A freight branch to Karita Port was built on 1 September 1944. The signal stop was upgraded to a passenger station as Obase Station on 15 October 1948. Parcel service ended on 1 February 1984, and JR Kyushu took control on 1 April 1987. A Midori no Madoguchi reservation counter was installed on 11 March 1989. The station took its present name, referencing the adjacent Nishi-Nippon Institute of Technology, on 1 October 1992. The Karita-Port freight branch was abolished on 1 October 2016.

Because the station was carved out of a signal box rather than purpose-built, its platforms are unusually narrow and the footbridge sits at the very end of the island platform.
