Nittazuka Station opened on 30 December 1928 with the Mikuni Awara Electric Railway's Fukuiguchi - Awara line. The operator was absorbed into Keifuku Electric Railway on 1 August 1942. Freight handling ended in 1967 and station duties were outsourced in 1975. After the June 2001 Echizen Main Line collision shut down the network, facilities transferred to Echizen Railway on 1 February 2003 and services resumed on 20 July of that year. To enable through running with Fukui Railway's Fukubu Line, low-floor platforms flanking the existing island platform were added on 27 March 2016, giving the present three-platform, two-track layout.

The station and surrounding district are named after the nearby Tōmyōji Nawate memorial marking the spot where the 14th-century warrior Nitta Yoshisada is said to have died in battle, though the memorial itself is closer to Yatsushima Station.
