Nasushiobara Station opened on 1898-11-28 as Higashi-Nasuno Station on the Nippon Railway line, and was nationalised in 1906 before being absorbed into the Tohoku Main Line under the 1909 line-naming reform. When the Tohoku Shinkansen began operating on 1982-06-23 the station was upgraded to a Shinkansen stop and renamed Nasushiobara, a compromise label adopted only after extended local wrangling between supporters of the names "Nasu" and "Shiobara." Japanese National Railways privatisation on 1987-04-01 placed the station under JR East. Suica acceptance began on 2004-10-16, making the station the northernmost in the suburban Tokyo Suica fare area.

Since the Shinkansen opened, members of the Imperial Family have used the station when travelling to the nearby Nasu Imperial Villa; the west side includes a dedicated Imperial entrance and reception room.
