History

Nakatsuchi Station opened on 29 November 1935 as part of Japanese National Railways on the Ōito Line, on the section now operated by JR West between Minami-Otari and Itoigawa in the mountainous Otari valley of Nagano Prefecture. The single ground-level side platform serves bidirectional traffic on the single-track route. Located 4.0 km from the intermediate terminus at Minami-Otari and 74.1 km from the Matsumoto end of the line, the station was unstaffed for much of its history. Following the breakup of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station came under the control of JR West, which continues to operate it as part of the through Ōito Line service.
