Nakasu-Kawabata Station opened on 20 April 1982 when the Fukuoka City Subway extended Line 1 from Tenjin and simultaneously opened Line 2 from this station to Gofukumachi, serving as the Line 1 terminus and Line 2 origin. On 22 March 1983 Line 1 was extended further east to Hakata, turning Nakasu-Kawabata into a through-station on that line. On 3 March 1993 Line 1 was extended again to Fukuoka Airport, and Line 1 received the brand name "Airport Line" and Line 2 "Hakozaki Line". The station's operations were outsourced on 1 April 2009. The station crosses beneath the Hakata River, with the platforms arranged on the second and third basement levels and an upper-level concourse.

The station's symbol mark, designed by Fukuoka-born graphic designer Isao Nishijima, stylises the kanji 中 (from Nakasu) and 川 (from Kawabata) into a happi-coat motif evoking the festival garments worn at the nearby Kushida Shrine.
