Naka-Urawa Station opened on 30 September 1985 in Minami-ku, Saitama, as a stop on JR East's Saikyō Line, the parallel commuter route built alongside the Tōhoku Shinkansen viaduct. The line runs between Ōsaki in Tokyo and Ōmiya in Saitama, with some services continuing north to Kawagoe via the Kawagoe Line and south to Shin-Kiba via the TWR Rinkai Line. The station lies 17.3 kilometres from Ikebukuro and consists of a single elevated island platform serving two tracks; the Shinkansen tracks pass immediately on the west side. The station is staffed, and its line-identification colour is canary yellow.

The station is the closest to the Saitama Prefectural Government Office, which sits a short walk from the elevated concourse.
