Matsubara Station opened on 1 September 1949 as Tamaden Matsubara Station (玉電松原駅), formed by relocating the earlier Rokusho-Jinja-mae stop closer to the present location and effectively merging it with Shichikenchō, which had stood toward Shimo-Takaido. It was renamed simply Matsubara on 11 May 1969. Today it is station SG09 on the Tōkyū Setagaya Line, located in Matsubara 4-chōme, Setagaya City, Tokyo, at the boundary with Akatsutsumi. The stop has two opposed side platforms; during the weekday morning peak a staff member is posted on the down platform to handle boarding and alighting, though fare collection is not done there.

Bus stops named "Matsubara" on the Shibu-54, Ume-01 and Ume-02 routes exist but lie about 800 m away from this rail stop; the nearest accessible bus stop is "Akatsutsumi," roughly 400 m off, so on-the-ground transfers between the Setagaya Line stop and the namesake bus stop are not practical.
