Maki Station opened on 16 July 1988 when the Miyafuku Railway (now Kyoto Tango Railway) Miyafuku Line was inaugurated, at Maki, Fukuchiyama, Kyoto Prefecture. On 1 April 2015 operation of the Kitakinki Tango Railway, the line's previous operator, was transferred to WILLER TRAINS, and the station became part of the Kyoto Tango Railway Miyafuku Line.

The Fukuchiyama Railway Promotion Council nickname for the station is "Salmon-spawning Station" (Sake no soshō eki), derived from the Maki River near the station, which is known for salmon swimming upstream.
