Maiko Station first opened on 1 July 1896 as Maiko-Kōen Temporary Stop on the Sanyō Railway between Tarumi and Akashi, was renamed Maiko Temporary Stop on 1 April 1899, and was promoted to a full station as Maiko on 1 December 1906 with the nationalisation of the Sanyō Railway. Electric trains began stopping here on 20 September 1934. The station closed briefly after the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake. With the opening of the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge on 14 March 1998, the station was lengthened by four cars and Rapid Service trains began stopping—turning Maiko into a major interchange with the long-distance buses running across the bridge to Awaji and Shikoku.

The Akashi Kaikyō Bridge passes directly above the station, and a five-minute walk to the elevated Maiko bus stop on the expressway puts passengers within reach of long-distance services to Awaji Island and Shikoku.
