Kuramae Station opened on 4 December 1960 as a stop on Toei Line 1 (renamed the Asakusa Line on 1 July 1978). The Toei Ōedo Line platform opened on 12 December 2000 when the new loop line was completed, making Kuramae a two-line transfer although the two stations sit in different blocks and have no underground passage. PASMO IC service began on 18 March 2007. Asakusa Line uses two side platforms with a connecting passage at the Asakusabashi end; the Ōedo Line uses a single island platform deeper underground. The station name derives from the Edo-era shogunal rice granary (Asakusa Ogura) that once stood on the site.

Kuramae is the only Toei subway interchange that requires passengers to walk above ground to change lines; the shortest path from the Asakusa Line's A4 exit to the Ōedo Line's A6 exit is roughly 200 metres.
