Kotoden-Yashima Station opened on 1911-11-18 as Yashima Station on the Tōsan Electric Tramway, in what is now Yashima-Naka-machi, Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture. The original site stood about 360 m west of the present location. In 1916 the line passed to Shikoku Suiryoku Denki, and in 1925 the station was renamed Yashima-Tozanguchi after the JR Kōtoku Line opened its own Yashima Station; the present location dates to 1929-04-21, coinciding with the opening of the Yashima Cable Railway. The 1929 wooden building still stands and was designated a Modern Industrial Heritage site by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on 2009-02-06. The Takamatsu-Kotohira Electric Railroad assumed operation on 1943-11-01 and the present name dates from 1950-04-16. The station was destaffed on 2005-04-01.

The 1929 wooden station building is part of the "Konpira-gū Pilgrimage Heritage" group recognised as a Modern Industrial Heritage site by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2009.
