• Tōkaidō Main Line: Ashiya (JR West) ⇄ Settsu-Motoyama

Kōnan-Yamate Station opened on 1 October 1996 as a new stop on the Tōkaidō Main Line (JR Kobe Line) between Ashiya and Settsu-Motoyama. With its opening it became the easternmost station within Kobe City, replacing Settsu-Motoyama in that distinction. Automatic ticket gates were installed on 4 December 1997, the digital arrival/departure board was added on 28 August 2001, the JR Kyoto/Kobe Line traffic-management system began on 29 July 2002, ICOCA IC service started on 1 November 2003, and a station-front plaza ("Nagomi Plaza") opened on 26 March 2006. The Midori-no-Madoguchi reservation window closed on 30 January 2010, replaced by a Midori-no-Kenbaiki-Plus machine. Station-numbering JR-A55 was assigned on 17 March 2018. The station is currently operated as a contract-managed station by JR West Transport Services since 1 December 2016.

Although the platform footprint was prepared to accommodate twelve-car trains, only eight-car platform sections were ever actually built. Because Kōnan-Yamate was sited primarily to serve Kōnan Women's University, the station's only ticket gate was placed on the north side. This single-side-gate layout has since become the template for all new stations added to the quad-tracked sections of the JR Kyoto and JR Kobe Lines.
