The station opened on 10 October 1912 as Kōjiromachi Station (神代町駅, Kōjiromachi-eki) on the Shimabara Railway Line. Freight handling ended on 30 June 1970 and from 1 August 1971 the station was run under contract. A new station building was constructed in July 1987. Contract operations ended and the station became unstaffed on 7 October 2000. On 1 October 2019 the station was renamed Kōjiro Station (神代駅), gaining the secondary name "Nabeshima-tei-mae" to publicise the nearby Nabeshima Residence. The two opposing side platforms are linked by an unsignalised pedestrian crossing in front of the station building; the waiting room on the south platform faces the station building across the crossing.

Kōjiro Station carries the secondary name "Nabeshima-tei-mae" to highlight the adjacent Kunimi-Kōjirokōji Historic Park and Nabeshima Residence, located in a Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
