Kōge Station opened on December 20, 1919 as a stop on the Imbi Light Railway connecting Tottori with Mochigase, in what is now the town of Yazu, Tottori Prefecture. The light-railway designation was abolished in 1922 and the route became the Inbi Line. On January 20, 1930, the Wakasa Line opened to Hayabusa, making Kōge a junction. The Tottori–Tsuyama through route was completed in 1932. Freight and parcel operations were withdrawn in the mid-1980s, and after the 1987 privatization of Japanese National Railways the station passed to JR West. In October 1987 the Wakasa Line was transferred to the third-sector Wakasa Railway, making Kōge a jointly used station. A new combined station building and community facility opened on March 23, 2015.

A peculiarity of the joint-use arrangement: the entry-ticket fare at Kōge (150 yen) costs more than a regular ticket to neighbouring Yazu Kōkō-mae Station (100 yen).
