Kodaira Station opened on 16 April 1927 on what is today the Seibu Shinjuku Line, and is also the start of the 14.3-kilometre Seibu Haijima Line. A separate Tamako Railway "Kodaira Station" had opened in November 1928 immediately to the west, soon renamed Moto-Kodaira; the two were merged on 15 November 1949. The line between Kodaira and Hagiyama was doubled in November 1967, and a bridge-over station building came into use in February 1968. Automatic ticket gates were installed in July 1993, and step-free access throughout the station followed in March 1998. Station numbering in fiscal 2012 designated this stop SS19.

Although it is the principal station of Kodaira City, the stop actually sits at the city's northwestern edge: the boundary with Higashimurayama runs just 100 m west of the platforms, while most of the city government offices are clustered 1.2 km away around Aoume-kaidō Station on the Tamako Line.
