Kintetsu Yao Station opened on 31 October 1924 as plain "Yao" Station on the Osaka Electric Railway's Yagi Line, today's Kintetsu Osaka Line. The station was renamed Daiki-Yao in August 1928, became Kankyū-Yao on 15 March 1941 after merger with Sangū Express, Kinki-Nihon-Yao on 1 June 1944 with the formation of Kintetsu, and finally Kintetsu Yao on 1 March 1970. Elevation work began in June 1974 and the station was relocated 0.3 km toward Ise-Nakagawa with completion of the viaduct on 17 December 1978. PiTaPa fares began on 1 April 2007.

Although Kintetsu Yao is the busiest station in Yao City and on the Osaka Line, ordinary express and rapid-express trains pass it without stopping — only sub-class express and below call here.
