Kinokawa Station originated on 1898-10-22 when the Nankai Railway opened Wakayama-Kitaguchi Station as the southern terminus of its extension from Ozaki. Following the completion of the Kinokawa rail bridge, the line was extended south to Wakayama-shi on 1903-03-21, and the original station was closed and replaced by the present Kinokawa Station on the new alignment. The 9.6 km Kada Line opened from the station on 1944-10-01, and the company became Nankai Electric Railway on 1947-06-01. Station numbering NK44 was introduced on 2012-04-01. The station has two side platforms; the Nankai Main Line and Kada Line diverge by means of a flat junction at the Nanba end of the platforms.

The original 1898 station, named Wakayama-Kitaguchi, was the southern terminus of the Nankai Railway and is mentioned in the 1900 Tetsudō Shōka ("Railway Song") collection's Kansai and Sangū-Nankai volume.
