Katsuta Station opened on 18 March 1910 as a Railway Bureau Jōban Line station. The Minato Railway (later Ibaraki Kōtsū) began its branch from Katsuta on 25 December 1913, making the depot an interchange. A private siding to Hitachi's Mito Works opened in 1942 and was used for employee trains until 1993. The station passed to JR East and JR Freight at JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987, and the 2002 elevated rebuild added a footbridge concourse. After the 11 March 2011 Tōhoku earthquake brought down part of the ceiling, JR resumed service on 31 March, with Hitachinaka Seaside Railway services returning on 3 July.

For one day on 5 October 2014 the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway platform name boards were rebranded "Katsuta Station" in kanji evoking Kirifuda Katsuta, the protagonist of the anime Duel Masters.
