Kasagi Station opened on 11 November 1897 as a Kansai Railway stop on the new Ueno (now Iga-Ueno) - Kamo segment, originally as a general (passenger and freight) station. The line was nationalised on 1 October 1907 and reclassified as part of the Kansai Main Line in 1909. The current station building dates from a 29 March 1955 rebuild, with parcel handling ending in October 1962. JR West took over on 1 April 1987 with the JNR breakup. A major 2017 renovation rebuilt the station forecourt with a rotary, and opened a community café and nail salon inside the building that November. ICOCA fare acceptance began on 13 March 2021.

The platform's stone foundations, footbridge, station building, and waiting room all retain the original Kansai Railway-era construction; the platform is built long enough to take eight-car trains despite only short local services calling.
