Jōgehama Station originated as a temporary halt opened on 25 July 1950, with three trains in each direction stopping daily, and was promoted to a full station on 25 July 1952. Parcel handling ended in December 1971 and the station became unstaffed at the same time. With the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR East. A volunteer honorary stationmaster, drawn from JR East retirees, has been assigned since 2012 to support local beautification work. The station has two opposed side platforms connected by a footbridge and operates as an unstaffed waiting facility administered from Nagaoka Station.
