Izumi Station opened on 1897-02-25 as part of the Nippon Railway, with the line nationalised in 1906 and assigned to the Jōban Line in 1909. A horse-drawn tramway, the forerunner of today's Fukushima Rinkai Railway, reached the station forecourt in 1907 and was later integrated as the Onahama Rinkō line in 1941. Passenger services on the Rinkai line ended in 1972, leaving the connection as a freight-only branch. JR East assumed operations on 1987-04-01 at JNR privatisation, and a new bridge-style station building opened on 1999-03-11. The station serves as the Jōban Line access point for the Onahama district.

Izumi serves as the closest Jōban Line station to Onahama Port and the Aquamarine Fukushima aquarium.
