Iwase Station opened on 16 January 1889 as a Mito Railway stop, in what is now Sakuragawa, Ibaraki. It was transferred to Nippon Railway in 1892 and nationalised in 1906 under the Railway Nationalization Act, becoming a Mito Line station in 1909. From 1918 to 1987 it also served as the northern terminus of the Tsukuba Railway's Tsukuba Line, which was abolished on 31 March 1987. The station passed to JR East with the 1987 JNR privatization, and Suica acceptance began on 18 November 2001. The Midori-no-Madoguchi staffed counter closed on 31 January 2019.

The 1898 wooden station building remains in use today, and the former Tsukuba Line platform area now serves as the trailhead and rest stop for the Tsukuba Rinrin cycling road.
