Hanzōmon Station opened on 9 December 1982 as the eastern terminus of the Hanzōmon Line, built by the Teito Rapid Transit Authority and named for the nearby Hanzōmon Gate of the Imperial Palace. It became a through station when the Hanzōmon Line was extended further east to Mitsukoshimae in 1989, though some morning rush-hour services still terminate here. Operations passed to Tokyo Metro on 1 April 2004 when TRTA was privatised. It is the only stop on the Hanzōmon Line not directly connected to another railway line; however, Kōjimachi Station on the Yūrakuchō Line is roughly five minutes away on foot.
