Gekkōji Station opened on 1 October 1931 as a Fuji Sanroku Electric Railway stop in what is now Midorigaoka 1-chōme, Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture; its station number is FJ15. The operator's 1960 rename moved it under Fuji Kyukō, and a further corporate split shifted it back to Fuji Sanroku Denki Tetsudō on 1 April 2022. Suica IC card service began on 14 March 2015, and a barrier-free renovation of the station building completed on 29 June 2017. The stop sits on the 26.6-km Fujikyuko Line 21.9 km from the terminus at Ōtsuki, has a single side platform serving one bidirectional track, and is an outsourced operation. It takes its name from the nearby Gekkōji temple.

The station takes its name from the Gekkōji temple just northeast of the line, with the Gekkōji-ike pond and park beside it.
