Fukudaimae Station opened on 3 February 2005 as a subway stop on the Fukuoka City Subway Nanakuma Line in the Jōnan ward of Fukuoka City. The station — also rendered "Fukuoka University Station" in English — serves the nearby Fukuoka University campus, its hospital, and the Graduate School of Nursing. Its station symbol is a black kite in blue, the emblem of Fukuoka University. The station has been in continuous local subway operation since opening and connects with Nishitetsu bus services at street level.

The station's emblem — a blue black kite — is taken directly from the symbol of Fukuoka University, whose campus lies immediately above the station.
