Fujine (Shizuoka)

Fujine Station opened on 20 July 1913 as one of the original stops on the privately built Fuji-Minobu Railway, between Fuji and the former Ōmiyamachi (now Fujinomiya). Although the planned siting was in the village of Fujine, steep gradients forced the railway to build the station across the boundary in Takaoka village, retaining the Fujine name as a compromise. Electrification arrived in 1927, and full nationalisation followed in May 1941, placing it on the JGR Minobu Line. Freight handling ended in 1980 and the station became unstaffed in 1998; JR Central has operated it since the 1987 privatisation.

The station name actually refers to a district on the Fujinomiya side of the boundary; built in Takaoka village instead, the 1913 station was a negotiated compromise after Fujine residents objected to losing the name.
