• Joetsu Line: Ojiya ⇄ Kita-Horinouchi

Echigo-Kawaguchi Station opened on 5 August 1921 as the northern terminus of the then-Jōetsu North Line from Higashi-Ojiya, and was extended toward Echigo-Horinouchi the following year. The Tōkamachi Line (later Iiyama Line) began running here in 1927, making the station a junction between the Jōetsu and Iiyama systems. The full Jōetsu Line opened in 1931, bringing through services from Ueno. Following privatization of the Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station joined JR East. Damage from the 2004 Chūetsu earthquake briefly suspended services, and the present station building dates from a 2016 renewal.

The station is the northernmost point inside the Shinshu One-Day Pass area, despite lying in Niigata Prefecture.
