Chiyo-Kenchōguchi opened on 27 April 1984 in Chiyo, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka, when the city subway's Line 2 (today the Hakozaki Line) was extended from Gofukumachi to Maidashi-Kyūdai-byōin-mae. The name had been decided on 12 September 1983; the provisional name 'Chiyomachi' was changed to a compound after local interests asked for the words 'prefectural office' to be added, although there is no longer a Chiyomachi district as such. Operation was contracted out on 1 July 2004, with management transferred to Kaizuka Station and day-to-day duties to a JR West subsidiary. The station code is H03.

Despite the suffix "Kenchō-guchi" (prefectural-office gate), Fukuoka Prefecture's main building is closer to Maidashi-Kyūdai-byōin-mae — only the assembly hall is closest to this station.
